Chimney crowns and caps

The top of the chimney takes the worst of the weather. A sound crown and a good cap keep water from getting inside.

The crown is the sloped slab of concrete or mortar on top of a masonry chimney, around the flue tile. The cap is the metal cover with screened sides that sits over the flue opening. Together, they keep rain and snow out of the flue and off the top of the brick.

Signs the crown is failing

  • Cracks across the crown, or pieces missing
  • Mortar from the top course washing out first
  • Water in the firebox or rust on the damper after rain
  • Loose flue tile at the top

Repair or replace?

Hairline cracks can often be sealed with a crown repair coating. A crown that's broken, flat or built from ordinary mortar is usually replaced with a properly formed concrete crown that slopes away from the flue and overhangs the brick so water drips clear of the chimney.

Why a cap matters in Rochester

Rochester is one of the windiest cities in the country, averaging about 12.6 miles per hour, with the strongest winds from January through April. Wind drives rain and snow sideways into open flues. A cap with a screen also keeps out birds, squirrels and raccoons, and helps stop sparks from a wood fire from landing on the roof.

Multiple flues

Older houses often have more than one flue in the same chimney, such as a fireplace and a furnace. A full-width cap can cover them all, but it has to suit each appliance. Ask the company to confirm it's compatible with everything venting into the chimney.

The chimney company prices the job after looking at the chimney, usually from the roof and down the flue with a light or camera. We don't quote prices, and any figure you hear over the phone before an inspection is only a rough starting point.

Common questions

Can a cracked crown be patched?

Small cracks often can be sealed. A crown that's broken up or has no slope is better replaced.

Do I need a cap if I never use the fireplace?

Yes. An unused flue still lets in water and animals. A cap is a small part that protects the whole chimney.
